We proudly manufacture our electric guitars and basses in the USA from scratch, and strive to build a premium quality instrument with no compromises. Here's how we do it:
Our wood bodies are made from hand-selected blanks of kiln-dried ash, alder or maple. Both raw wood and finished 2-piece blanks are kept in a drying cabinet to ensure a low moisture content. When ready we CNC machine them here in our shop then each body is hand-sanded, carefully inspected and sealed before we finish it.
Our standard necks are hand-crafted in Virginia from quarter-sawn hard maple with Maple, Rosewood or Pau Ferro fretboards. Other neck materials such as mahogany, rosewood or ebony can be selected upon request, just let us know what you want.
Standard neck specifications:
Fender scale 25.5"
22 or 24 Medium/high stainless steel frets (.045" crown height)
1-11/16" TUSQ XL graphite nut, Epiphone string spacing
Modern Slim-C profile .780" thickness at 1st fret, .860" at 12th fret (20mm / 22mm)
Bi-directional steel truss rod
Other neck styles can be made, different profiles, thicknesses, radius and fret size, just let us know what you want.
Our internal circuitry consist of 250K passive volume and tone controls from EMG USA, a 6-way selector switch, high-quality output jack and a 9V battery for active pickups. That's it. There is no preamp, no effects or control board, just the pure tone of your pickups coming out. Active and passive pickups can be installed together and they run through the same volume and tone controls at the same volume level. Switches or push-pull pots can easily be added for coil splitting, phasing or other pickup control options.
Our standard guitars come with a set of Kent Armstrong pickups which we have found to be a great value and put out great tones. We also feature EMG USA pickups that cover virtually any musical style with their expansive and high-quality product line. We can also install any other make or model of pickup you like, or you can buy them and install them yourself in minutes.
We CNC machine our module parts in-house out of aluminum and stainless steel (no plastic) and they snap in place mechanically for a tight positive lock. Different pickup configurations are available and it is easy to wire in your own pickups with just a screwdriver, no soldering needed. Modules come in half size (holds one or two pickups) or full-size which can hold two or three pickups together as a set. Our modules are reversible from bridge to neck position.
We proudly feature top-shelf USA-made components from Hipshot, EMG, Dunlop, Kahler, GHS and others. We've gone out of our way to give you an amazing guitar designed and fabricated in the USA, and at an affordable price.
By default our guitars come with either three half-size modules, or one full-size and one half-size. This way you've got a ready-to-play instrument right out of the box, plus a spare pickup module to experiment with. Additional modules of all types are available on our Accessories page.
Somnium guitars typically feature one volume, one tone and one pickup selector switch. We are careful to mount the knobs below the bridge pickup so that your strumming hand doesn't hit your controls while you are playing. If you prefer to have the controls in a particular setup just call us and we can custom-make a body that fits your preferences.
